Documentation is an essential element in a job performance evaluation system. When truly effective, documentation creates a record of employment; including performance-related facts and incidences, and the steps and actions taken by the employer. This ‘record’ serves as an aid to current and future managers and HR professionals for historical perspective, performance evaluations, audits, and potential legal claims.
In this interactive session, supervisors will explore their role in creating clear, effective documentation of employee performance issues as they arise. Particular focus is placed on when and how to document an employee’s performance, how to define the line between documentation and discipline, and the performance counseling session. Participants will practice the art of discussing performance-related issues, from both a supervisors’ and the employees’ perspective.
At the close of this session, attendees will know and understand a supervisor’s responsibility in documentation, and when to contact human resources. They will also be able to describe the implications of not documenting, and the importance of the performance counseling session.
Bob Barry, Risk Management Consultant, joined Primex3 in 2011 as an Education and Training Consultant focusing on the Law Enforcement and Corrections membership of the Primex3 pools. Prior to joining the Primex3 team, Bob was the Police Chief for the City of Concord, a position that he held for over four years. Bob brings a total of more than twenty five years of law enforcement experience to Primex3. At various times during his career, Bob was involved in recruitment, screening and hiring staff; negotiating collective bargaining agreements; conducting training; developing and enforcing policy; conducting internal investigations; developing and revising the Department Strategic Plan; crime analysis and grant writing. While Deputy Chief, Bob was the primary responsible department representative for developing and managing the operating and capital improvement budgets for both the police and parking operations within the City.
In his current role as a Risk Management Consultant, Bob continues to focus on providing consultant services to the Law Enforcement community along with Risk Management and training services to all Primex3 members. Bob is the Risk Management Consultant for Belknap and Sullivan County.
Carol M. Kilmister, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, Human Resource Consultant
Carol Kilmister is a Human Resource Consultant in the Legal and HR Services Department at Primex3 where she provides training, guidance, and support to Property & Liability members. Prior to coming to Primex3, she worked for many years as the Director of HR for a multi-district SAU in NH. She is a graduate of Rivier University with a Master of Science degree in Human Resource Administration and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Plymouth State University. In addition, she holds national certification as a senior HR professional from both HRCI and SHRM. She serves on the board of directors of the Greater Concord HR Association of SHRM as well as the Association of NH Public Employer HR Administrators (ANHPEHRA).
