The actor Alan Rickman once said, “You only speak because you wish to respond to something you’ve heard.” The art of listening is crucial to effective acting, and this training uses techniques drawn from theatre and improvisation to help participants hone their listening skills. Good listening includes refining the craft of observation, learning to be present and without judgement, making clear eye contact, and understanding body language.

Virtual training includes lecture, slides, and interactive activities in large and small groups. Participants will be given an opportunity to examine their own listening styles; practice techniques and strategies that support their interpersonal communication goals; and apply these tools to scenarios they may encounter in their daily and professional life.

  • Increase awareness of participants’ own unique listening styles
  • Apply a collaborative “Yes And” approach to listening and communication
  • Practice patience and presence in a variety of challenging situations
  • Examine how these principles apply to a changing digital world

  • CJ Lewis

    CJ Lewis is a multi-disciplinary creative artist and arts educator based in Portsmouth, NH. His work centers around theatre practice and performance, with a focus on the applied aspects of the field. He has been a Teaching Artist and Resident Company member at NH Theatre Project since 2009, and in that time has produced, written, directed, designed, and performed in dozens of projects including an award-winning production of Doug Wright’s I Am My Own Wife. He also works as a private coach, and develops and implements classes, camps, workshops, and residencies throughout the state and region; working with a wide breadth of ages, abilities, and experience levels.

    Genevieve Aichele

    Genevieve Aichele is a theatre artist and the founding artistic director of New Hampshire Theatre Project based in Portsmouth, NH. She has performed, directed and taught performing arts and public speaking for over forty years throughout the United States, Europe and Hong Kong. Genevieve has taught public speaking and community leadership at the University of New Hampshire and Great Bay Community College, is an affiliate consultant with The Woodland Group and the Brown Center at UNH, and has worked with numerous corporate and individual business clients in presentation skills, public speaking, business storytelling, conflict resolution, team management, and leadership. Sample past clients include VF Timberland, Fuji Dimatix, Unitil, National Education Association, Gould Academy, Landy Management, City Year New Hampshire, and hundreds of private clients. including attorneys, doctors, marketing & sales professionals, human resource specialists, academics, ESL speakers, IT experts, managers, VP’s and CFO’s. Genevieve specializes in working with those who struggle with public speaking due to anxiety, those who speak English as a second language, and those in professional transition.
