When major news events happen, conducting a press conference can be the most efficient and effective method of communicating important updates to the public. This session will provide participants with the basic information necessary to organize and execute a successful press conference.

Training will be focused in these areas:

• Logistics and set up

• Creating the "Run of Show"

• Preparing talking points

• Controlling the event (including Q&A)

• Writing and issuing a press release

Attendees will hold a mock press conference that will be recorded and played back during the session for discussion and analysis.

    Darcie Fisher

    Darcie Fisher is a two-time, Emmy Award winning former broadcast journalist who spent thirteen years working in television news in Boston.  In her role as a senior level communications professional with Ellis Strategies, she is guided by the experiences she gained both working in the field as a local news reporter and on the assignment desk, making high-stakes decisions that shaped the station’s nightly broadcast. That background gives Darcie a unique perspective into how to successfully communicate with different people in the newsroom and craft her news releases and advisories to fit the journalist.

    Darcie has experience with crisis communications for various clients as well as freelance health story writing and video production – interviewing clients and writing/editing video profiles which appear on corporate websites in addition to being used for promotional and fundraising opportunities. 

    Darcie is dedicated to her own philanthropic work and volunteers her time with several local and national charitable organizations.

    Matt Ellis

    Matt Ellis is an award-winning television news journalist, author and founder of Ellis Strategies, a strategic communications firm in Boston, Mass. The company provides expert public relations, crisis communication and video production.

    Matt also provides expert media training and coaches professionals of all levels on how to be a better public speaker. Clients include scientists, educators, engineers and business leaders from across New England. 

    Starting as a morning anchor and one-man-band reporter at WVVA TV in Bluefield, West Virginia, Matt rose the ranks of TV News to assume positions as Executive Producer for WCBS TV, News Director for WBZ TV and Head Writer for “Good Morning America,” where he was part of the team honored with a George Foster Peabody Award for coverage of the attacks of September 11, 2001.

    In 2017, he published “Don’t Just Say It: a News Director’s Practical Guide to Public Speaking,” which gives speakers at all levels tools to improve their performance and confidence.

    Matt has been honored with an Emmy Award from the New England Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and was recognized for excellence by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Associated Press, the Public Relations Society of America and the Publicity Club of New England.
