Solid waste facilities can be dangerous places for employees. This program will provide facility operators and staff with a basic overview of hazards encountered at solid waste facilities and important steps to stay safe on the job. The three-hour program may also fulfill the 2.5 hours of relevant continuing education required every year to keep operator certification current.  Operators should check with the NH Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) Solid Waste Operator Training and Certification Division to make sure these educational contact hours can apply.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify common hazards associated with solid waste operations such as transfer stations and recycling centers.
  2. Develop strategies to protect staff from identified hazards including the use of personal protective equipment and the development of performance based policies.
  3. Understand legal requirements for safety on the job including a review of relevant NH Department of Labor Rules concerning occupational safety & health.

    David Witham

    Dave Witham, Director of Risk Management, has been a member of the Primex3 Risk Management Services Department for 35 years.  David holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Safety from Keene State College and holds the Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designation though the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research.  David is currently an At-Large City Councilor and Deputy Mayor in the City of Somersworth and is the Council’s designee to the City’s Planning Board.  David has chaired the City’s Charter Review Commission and served for more than 24 years as a call firefighter and call department crew chief.  When not busy at work David enjoys umpiring high school and American Legion Baseball and snowboarding on NH’s slopes.

    Derek Martel

    Derek joined Primex3 in 2022 as a Risk Management Consultant, working with members to address their training and risk management needs.  He is a 25-year veteran of the fire service and retired from the Concord Fire Department as Captain of the Broadway Station.  In addition, Derek served as a regional coordinator for the PFFNH peer support team and instructed at the NH Fire Academy.  He is a graduate of Columbia Southern University and lives in Concord with his wife, two daughters, a dog, and a bevy of chickens.
